How long is present?

I wanted to check if someone has any ideas about how long 'present' is?

Is it one second, one minute, one hour or one day?

How do we decide that an event is not in the present anymore but has gone over to the past?

Present is what is "Now".The present moment refers to right now ,right here. Present is not this hour or this day...it is "NOW".
the current moment that u and i are existing in.

A moment...has nothing to do with time..its about your existence NOW.When i say "live in the present" and live for the moment i mean live now..Its not about quantifying moment.Think harder!

but before u start thinking harder, you will have to come out of the IIT D "engineer mind" where everything is quantified into formulae and numbers.

This is one thing I have never understood. What is NOW? If NOW is all that exists, time cannot exist. If time exists, it has to be something more than NOW.

Am I missing something here?

Hey Manas, We cannot measure the truthfulness of time. Afterall it is(measure of time in seconds, minutes, hours...) created by humans. We cannot give dumb justification to any of the creations of nature!

It is only understood by the self (so called "Soul")

If you get many more questions shoot me mail at kp.kashyap@gmail.com or come online in G'talk. Lets discuss and get clarified with all these...

Hi Manas
I'm not sure if this question still excites you, but it excited me at least.

My stand is Time is one of the 4 coordinates which collectively defines the the existence of any event/person in a frame of reference.

Now, the things like sec, min, hour etc try to quantify the time and the things like present, past and future etc try to classify the state of the time. So there is no direct co-relation as you are trying to strike.

So to answer ur question truely, I'll say Present is the state of time which starts when Past ends and continues till Future starts.

Now u r completely free to classify any point on the time scale in any of the ways you want and at the same time you can quantify them also.
